Pantheon: Dwarven
Type: Lesser God
Sphere of Influence: Greed
Abbathor is the Great Master of Greed, and the darker side of Dwarven personality and society. He was not always evil, and once was a great help to the gods of the Dwarves and Moradin in ancient times. But, over eons, his greed grew, and he took to stealing and cheating to get what he wanted, and his lust for wealth knew no bounds.
After repeated incidents with his fellow gods, he was eventually exiled for a term. But, in bitterness and hate, he has made that exile permanent. Now, he dwells apart in a great hall within the second layer of Hades, where he gathers the shades of dead Dwarves whose greed and lust for wealth have damned them. These halls are said to be filled with the wealth of ages. He has become untrustworthy, and will aid no one unless it suits his own purposes. He despises non-Dwarves (and many Dwarves, for that matter). He has an uneasy friendship with Vergodain, with whom he will sometimes travel. Evil Dwarven thieves typically worship him, if they worship anyone.
Abbathor’s greed manifests itself frequently. Should he set eyes upon any magical item, or on treasure of any note, there is a 40% chance that he will attempt to steal it outright, or slay the owner and then take it (50% chance of either). Abbathor wears leather armor and furs, made from the skins of beings and creatures who have opposed him in the past. He also wears wealth ostentatiously, beyond what would be considered in good taste by any Dwarf. He is often attended by a group of Rappers, undead Dwarves who sometimes haunt old Dwarven diggings.
He uses a +5 dagger with a diamond blade and jewels set into the hilt. The dagger does 2-24 points of damage, and can detect the presence of precious metals (kind and amount) in a 20’ radius. Anyone but Abbathor who grasps this weapon will suffer the loss of one experience level at once, and will lose another level each round the dagger continues to be held. Abbathor also owns a shield that casts one Cause Blindness spell per round (save at -6) at anyone within range. If frustrated when attempting to steal an item, Abbathor will try to destroy the item so he will not be tormented by the memory of his failure
