After several nights of resting and recovery, the party prepared to set out once more. But first, Iban scried the torturer priestess (just chatting with other priestesses in their temple), the Duergar Dwarves they'd met previously (they were apparently in a Duergar city, where they entered a citadel to meet with apparent leaders of their folk), and Vorlissa the Drow (she was in the tavern, and Iban cut the scrying quickly to avoid being detected).
They headed out to explore the windy, pit trap filled corridors nearby. One pit they discovered was shallower than the others, only 10' Curious at the anomaly, the party searched this one and found a secret door. Beyond was a small room containing a single coffin. Various detection spells revealed nothing, so Iban stabbed it repeatedly with his sword before the party broke it open. it was empty, except for some dirt. Fearing a vampire, the party destroyed the coffin and burned the wreckage.
Continuing on, the party ran into a group of Wraiths. They were turned by ZZ but, not long after, they ran into a group of five led by an apparent Vampire wielding a sword, and ZZ only succeeded in turning one Wraith (Mordecai failed altogether). Fortunately for the party, the only hit they took was an image of Iban (he was saved from being drained by a mirror image spell). Meanwhile, the party threw everything they could at the Vampire. Chastened, the Vampire flew away at high speed. Iban and Cadwallider pursued it, but lost it in the winding corridors.
The party now left the winding corridors and ran into a single Dark Folk, who proved to be a barker for the Dark Market. The party parleyed with him for some time, bribing him for information. In the end, they hired Grint, as he named himself, to spy on Vorlissa for them. The party said they would see him when they saw him, but he was insistent they arrange a meeting time as he wished to get his money. Thus, they arranged to meet in three days time at the pub off the Dark Market.
Continuing onward, the party now ran into a group of Duergar. A brief parley showed that they knew of the party; they did not seem particularly friendly but neither were they hostile. They did, however, warn the party that the direction they were headed led to a dead end at a "disquieting room." Parting, the party soon found what they referred to. They came to a very large, pyramidal shaped room. At the center was a 15' tall statue of a huge, horned demon. Surrounding it were 8 statues of lesser demons, each about 8’ tall. Before each statue was a black candle about 3’ high, carved with weird runes. The party did not like this at all but stayed long enough to use ZZ's minieral detection ability in each corner, finding nothing. They departed thereafter.
After a long traverse, the party came to a large natural cavern with a series of ascending shelves with several side caves. At the far end were three high shelves, upon each of which stood a weird creature. They were weirdly humanoid hybrids of a vulture and a reptile, with beaked heads and elongated necks like a vulture but fanged like a snake. They had the remnants of quills and wings on their bodies, but also humanoid type arms. They wore elaborate, brocaded robes and clothing of great size though it was aged and in poor condition. Cadwallider initially scouted invisibly, but they seemed aware of his presence. Within dark side caves he could see glowing purple eyes looking out. An odd parley resulted, odd in that the creatures never once spoke to anyone in the party, but instead talked to one another in such a way as to get the message across, or to ask questions. They seemed to be interested in information and esoteric knowledge and magic. In the end, the party traded numerous magic items for other items of use. They were particularly excited by the Talisman of Ultimate Evil that Iban offered for a Rod of Resurrection. it proved to be beneficial trade for the party (and presumably the bird things), and the party left their chamber well pleased...
