The party continued their explorations of the new dungeon's uppermost level and soon ran into five Hobgoblins. The party asked if they served the cult of torturers, but they just laughed and asked if the party had somewhere else better to be. A rancorous debate broke out in the party on whether or not to kill them, which caused the Hobgoblins to laugh with cruel mirth. Iban responded with a lightning bolt that killed them all. Leaving the corpses, the party explored to the north, once again detecting the invisible wizard eye that appeared from thin air nearby -- the wizard controlling it was not located. It followed the party for ten minutes or so before vanishing.
Along the northern 20-foot-wide passageway, the party took time to examine the adamant doors once again. Iban tried forcing it unsuccessfully, and a knock spell from Cadwallider also failed to open it. Nearby, the party was assailed by a group of hunting spiders. Dimbul was poisoned (again) before they could be slain. ZZ slowed poison to assist him and, with a handful of gold from Iban, he was escorted to the dungeon exit and sent back to the city to seek a more lasting cure (ZZ also gave him a few gems to give to the Dwarf guards above).
The party explored two rooms, one with an illusory topless ceiling and one with an illusory bottomless hole, though the party was unable to discern much else from them. Further on, the party came to a large portcullis blocking access to a room with the skeleton of a dragon lying in it. Iban failed to lift the bars but Rowan did, allowing ZZ to slip in and flip a lever to keep the gate raised. As the party began to explore, the dragon skeleton animated. It blasted the party with a zone of darkness that also paralyzed Iban. The dragon skeleton seemed unaffected by the darkness and rushed at Aldeberon, nearly killing him in a few short minutes (he was saved by ZZ with a death's door spell). The melee was terrible as the dragon proved to be extremely powerful, with a terrible bite. Iban blew his Horn of Valhalla to summon aid, and two of his four Maerlings were slain by the thing (as was one image created by a mirror image spell).
In the end, the dragon skeleton was destroyed (at which time the party discussed if they should have tried turning it). beaten and weary, they took the skull and departed the dungeon to rest and recuperate for a few days.
