The party decided to try the well-traveled path to see what they might find that way. As they went forward there was a slight breeze blowing in their face, tracked back to a short staircase going down. Meanwhile they checked a door nearby where Del could hear heavy movement and talking. Since everyone was invisible, they decided to check further by the simple expedient of knocking – the door opened with two Ogres peering out and looking annoyed. The party decided to take the Ogres out, first casting silence on a coin. The party burst into the silenced room and found three Ogres total. One tried to make a run for another door beyond but was shot down with magic missiles by Sirius. The other two were slain quickly, and the party discovered that they did not appear to sleep in this room, though there was a small stash of food and barrels of drink. They also found a difficult to spot peephole looking out to the corridor from which they’d come.
Heading north where the one Ogre tried to run, they found two doors beyond. Deaglan could hear noise to the east but not north, so the party decided to rush in again before their silence elapsed. Beyond they found thirteen Ogres (and three additional bed rolls). Before the Ogres could react, Burt and Sirius hit the majority of them with cones of cold; the rest were slain rather handily by the fighters. Moving to the north door, the party was no longer silenced. Beyond the door were three large Ogres who proved to be rather tough fighters. A vicious melee ensued, during which HelgaVinka’s hand was cut off by the largest Ogre wielding a (magic halberd)! Still, the Ogres were cut down in the end. Tending to Helga’s maimed stump, the party found a small but decent treasure in some sacks in this room.
Heading out again, Deaglan passively sensed a secret door which led to a short corridor. In it, Deaglan sensed not one, but TWO additional secret doors (that was three 1’s in a row!). One simply linked up to previously explored areas but the second proved to be a forgotten treasury of some sort filled with a rather sizable treasure. Among the various items recovered was a cleric scroll that included a heal spell. Although more powerful than what he normally could cast, Mordecai used it and was able to restore Helga’s hand, which was rather fortuitous all around.
Well pleased, the party now descended the stairs, now detecting a slight sulfur smell. Also, everyone could now hear the quiet and periodic moaning coming from ahead. The area now turned into natural caverns, the floor worn smooth from a great deal of travel. ON the walls in areas were 15’ tall figures with weirdly elongated torsos, arms and legs. Even the eyes were elongated, giving the carved figures a bizarre and unsettling appearance. Indecipherable pictograms also adorned the wall (Deaglan was unable to read them).
The main cave now split north and east, with north being the much more traveled route. To the east were numerous fissures in the cave wall to the north and it was from these that the moaning sound, smell, and breeze emanated. After some minor explorations, the cavern turned north then back west, where the party encountered a group of creatures sitting in the cavern. They immediately began asking for alms and it seemed apparent they were beggars of varying race, but all rather pitiful looking. A brief observation showed that there were actually two groups, the one closer appearing to be lame and the one further away all blind. Their cries went unheeded and the party took a side cave to explore. Passing what appeared to be skeletons set up in warning, the party rushed in on a small tribe of Goblins who reacted by throwing burning oil flasks at the party. Still, mere Goblins were eradicated quite rapidly and their small treasure secured…
