The party loaned Sandrix magic armor and a sword. They then headed out, only for Deaglan to sense a secret door that even the half orc said he was unaware of. This led to a short halllway beyond which the party found a room of polished, highly uniform grey, quite different from the rest of the dungeon. The exception was a 3-foot-wide path of polished, mottled black and white stone running from the center of the floor from the middle of the room through the opening to the east. There were 8 statues of hooded figures that looked much like monks, facing east, backs to the room, their heads and eyes firmly downcast. A dark grey curtain with a half black, half white balance depicted on it blocked the view to the east, but a hint of light could be seen coming around its edges. ZZ immediately felt uncomfortable in the room, his Jester Suit the primary source of unease. The entire room radiated very strong magic when Sirius checked. Sandrix took the opportunity to get overly chatty and tell everyone he was a follower of Velune, the lawful neutral moon goddess. The balance was a symbol of Elsirion, brother of the god Maladominus, and closely aligned to his Velune, etc.
Hans decided to try the path but had got no further than his second step when he vanished. Deaglan now examined the monk statues in detail, determining they were just statues and not petrification victims. Sirius now tried the path, this time with his head downcast like the statues, and he managed to reach and pass the curtain. The room beyond was lit by four white globes attached to plain iron rods descending from the ceiling. The walls were of the same grey stone as #15 and the feeling of Law was stronger here than outside. A large grey curtain blocked an alcove to the east, upon which was embroidered “The Face of the Justiciar” above another black and white balance. Smaller curtains blocked egresses to north and south, the northern one with “Truth” embroidered on it and the southern with “Justice.”
Mordecai followed without incident. They first went through the northern curtain and found a room made of half black, half white polished stone (white to the east, black to the west), starting right at the curtain. There was a stone table of the same material (also half black and white) centered on the north wall upon which were three large tomes. All had titles on their covers, the left the Book of Endless Years, the middle the Book of Truth, and the right the Book of Foresight.
The two then turned back and went to the south where they found a similar room, but this one occupied by a very old man praying before a table holding a gleaming two-handed sword. He turned and greeted the party friendly enough They asked about Hans vanishing and the old man said that those who did not approach Elsirion with a humble posture would be punished for their lack of respect by being teleported away, though he could not say where. He explained that he had been part of a war in this area between Law and Chaos some years ago. After law’s victory (of course), he was tasked to guard this sword and thought he might have been forgotten. His name was Rollor and some questioning revealed that he had been here for over 700 years (though he made it sound much less). He grateful took a drink of water and some food from the party (he would’ve preferred alcohol but acknowledged that water was “pure” and therefore of law). The sword was named Justice of Law and it was a mighty weapon of lore, wielded only by the greatest proponents of law. Rollor did ask if anyone wished to replace him as he was growing old, but none of the party were interested, nor was Sandrix, who they called in. Rollor told the party a little about the books, saying the Book of Endless Years was dangerous.
Meanwhile, Hans found himself in a small room stuffed and almost buried under papers, with a small desk and small cot. Inside was another Greater Ghoul, who seemed most put out by his unexpected guest. He began to insist that he accompany him to their majesty’s throne room as word had just arrived of great importance to the court. Hans demurred and teleported back to the party.
Taking their leave, they went back to the books. Mordecai tried the Book of Foresight which gave him a flurry of visions and left him the ability to gain a foresight spell once in the future. Sirius tried the Book of Endless Years and was washed over by many millennia of time, which gained him greater intelligence. Hans tried the Book of Truth and found it listed the names of all in the party and told somewhat of their adventures but the page ended with stating to say when they died – he could not turn the page to read that.
The party now left the temple and went after the second Dark Master, finding him and killing him with little trouble (he did not seem to be a spellcaster). They had passed a pit trap and Deaglan decided he wanted to explore it for secret doors. Instead, he found it was a chute sliding the dropped victims towards a large cavern with a pool of water at the bottom. The half elf dropped into the water since he had a ring of swimming, but the splash awoke a trio of cave fishers. Fortunately Hans, who had levitated down to support, was able to use a cone of cold to kill two of them, while Deaglan slew the third. Thinking there may have been past victims, Deaglan and Helga used rings of swimming to survey the bottom of the pole, where they found a fair amount of forgotten treasure.
The party now decided to follow the cave in the opposite direction as the Fishers. They first found a hidden door which led to a cave filled with bones, many of them gnawed upon and some used to make a firepit, albeit not a recent one. The natural cave began to climb and the party soon found a cavern filled with mist that seemed to make everyone lethargic. ZZ cat dispel magic which thinned the mist for a time. They could hear noise to the south so Hans sent a lightning bolt that direction. Meanwhile, Sirius went invisible and took to his broom of flying and scouted ahead, finding a troll band laying in wait for the party. Beyond them he found more caverns which grew colder, as well as a bluish-white glow before returning to report. The party then raised a minor globe of invulnerability and sent a volley of fireballs at the trolls. Two maimed Trolls rushed forward, only to die quickly. Some treasure was recovered from what appeared to be a camp the trolls had been using for some time.
The party now headed south to investigate the cold and glow, only to find a wall of ice blocking their way…
