The party passed through the red drapes at the southern end of the amphitheater room with the deep pit in the center and pushed south, where Jarrik and Bel fell into a pit trap infested with Green Slime. Quickly, the two exchanged a Ring of Fire Resistance and, with some burning oil, the slime was eradicated before it could do permanent harm.
The party next came to a room in the middle of which sat a large stone plinth. In a shallow declivity atop it sat an immense brain some 4’ in diameter; it pulsed slightly and was clearly alive. A dome of clear glass, lit from a glow below, protected the brain. Although it had no eyes, the party could feel a malicious will from it. Indeed, Mordecai and Burt suddenly found themselves under a strange compulsion to protect the giant brain. The party, knowing they were under threat, attacked. However, Hans (and later Belo) were hit by magic from the thing, sending them into a weird, extra-dimensional maze that took them some time to escape. The melee was confusing, as some in the party sought to protect the brain while most sought to destroy it by smashing through its glass dome (which was as strong as steel). Burt covered the thing in darkness and Mordecai sought to disrupt the fight, taking a hit from Hans for the trouble. But, eventually the glass was smashed and the brain easily dispatched, restoring Burt and Mordecai.
In a nearby room, the party discovered a secret room, where Burt used an Unseen Servant to spring a number of traps. Unfortunately, one was a poison gas trap, which affected Burt and Atticus. ZZ was able to cast neutralize poison on Burt but Atticus’ attempt to shapechange to a new form to do the same failed. Mordecai subsequently cast slow poison. This accomplished, the party discovered a sizable treasure including a wand (later identified to be a Wand of Earth and Stone) and a strange fishing pole.
As the wand could shape stone and create a passwall, the party decided to use it to make a sneak attack on the nearby wraith. This they did with great success, destroying it before it could harm anyone. Sadly, it had not treasure so the party moved on in their explorations. They soon ran into a wandering Rust Monster which destroyed Jarrik’s magic sword, much to his dismay! The party slew the creature and dragged its corpse to the iron spear they’d found earlier embedded in a statue. The monster did nothing to it. However, Atticus decided to try using stone shape on the statue, and this freed the spear. He took it up and was immediately hit with a wave of mental energy as an alien intelligence in the spear sought to take control of him. The Druid fought back and retained control of both himself and the spear.
Weary, the party now returned to the wraith’s hidden lair, where they rested the night.
