The party stood before the tomb entrances once more. They opted to enter the as yet unexplored middle door first. Unfortunately, it proved to be wizard locked which Bel could not open. Hans then cast two strength spells on Burt who then was able to eventually force it open. Inside was another tomb similar to the other two, though with a slightly different layout, to include a large open pit across most of the western end. Mordecai cast find traps and located another pair of pits across the room. Moving carefully along the north wall, the party got to the center of the room, where Hans used his wand to detect secret doors, finding none.
Next up, Bur kicked in a door across from the way they’d entered, revealing a crypt and a half dozen mummies. The mummies got the jump on Burt and, worse, caused Atticus, Mordecai and Bel to be paralyzed with fear for a few crucial minutes. At the far end of the mummy crypt was a statue of a black, bat-winged demon of some sort; from its wide open mouth began to periodically fly a shadowy bat that moved with great speed; when eventually slain, these bats would vanish in a puff of smoke. A nasty fight broke out in the doorway to the tomb. Hans helped things with a minor globe of invulnerability followed up with a lighting bolt. Meanwhile, Atticus shifted into a snake form and tried to get at the bat-producing statue, though with limited results. Mordecai, when he recovered, managed to turn then surviving mummies, but this did not stop the bats. Some oil injured one, but it took cold steel to finish them all off. When the last mummy fell, the last bat (a poor thing that smashed its face into a wall with double crit misses), vanished in a puff of smoke.
In addition to the ruby pendants each mummy wore, ZZ used his Earth Dragon ring to discover a hidden treasure trove, which proved rich indeed. A throughout search revealed no other ways in or out of this tomb area, and it seemed to be quite independent of the other areas. Given this, the party opted to camp right here, mainly because Burt, Atticus, and Jarrik had all been afflicted by mummy rot. This they did without incident, and the next morning three cure disease spells removed the rot. Meanwhile, Attics decided to keep the elf-made leather armor, which proved to provide a degree of stealth when worn.
The party exited the tomb only to discover the entire outside area covered with crisscrossing tracks of booted feet and wolf tracks. They seemed to have come up form the south. Several sets apparently entered the other two tombs; the one the party had rested in seemed to have had the door checked, though not opened. During this examination, the party spotted one of the spy ravens; it tried to flee but Hans brought it down with a sleep spell. As best Jarrik could tell, there were around four or five wolves.
The party now reentered the dungeon and made their ways to the great bronze portal they’d not yet opened, but knew they possessed the key to. Beyond, they found a roughly hewn passage, which they followed for a long way (certainly over a mile), that wound to the east and south. It eventually led to a stout door to the south. Jarrik found some booted tracks heading the opposite way of the party, but they seemed days or maybe weeks old. So, the party decided to rest right where they were to ensure they were ready for what came next.
Next day, they discovered the door to be wizard locked. So, with strength spells cast, and a silence spell from ZZ, the party beat down the door and came into an odd room. It was small and constricted to a space about 10’ wide. At the apex of the indented part, blocking the way ahead, were a pair of three-headed demo statues similar to Type I demons (vulture heads, etc). They gave off a sense of menace, intelligence, and watchfulness; their eyes glowed red. The party tried throwing a coin between them, but it simply stopped cold, as if it hit an invisible barrier. When the party moved forward into the room, the statue heads and necks elongated and attacked. They also spit acid, making them a rather dangerous foe. Still, the party soon was able to bash them down, one by one. When the second fell, the menace dissipated. Fortunately, the melee had been silent, and the party was able to proceed
